The White Sox have placed 30-year old righty starting pitcher Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 6th with a right abductor strain. Peavy has pitched in 5 games (all starts) so far this year for the White Sox and he is 2-1 with a 4.66 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP. The White Sox have called up 26-year old righty reliever/starter Lucas Harrell to replace Peavy on the roster, but he will work out of the bullpen. Harrell pitched in 1 game (0 starts) earlier this year for the White Sox and he was 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP. Harrell has pitched in 9 games (3 starts) in parts of two years with the White Sox and he is 1-0 with a 5.46 ERA and a 2.18 WHIP. The White Sox should be o.k. without Peavy as they already have five solid starting pitchers.

22-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jared Mitchell was the White Sox’ #4 prospect heading into this season according to Baseball America. Mitchell missed all of the 2010 season after running into a wall in spring training and tearing a tendon in his left ankle. Mitchell has played in 54 games in A-ball so far this year and he is 46 for 204 (.225 avg, .709 OPS) with 28 runs scored, 7 homers, 31 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. He has now played in 88 games in his first two years in the minors and he is 80 for 319 (.251 avg, .763 OPS) with 41 runs scored, 7 homers, 41 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. The Pale Hose are going to take things slow with Mitchell.

The White Sox have designated 26-year old righty starting pitcher Jeff Marquez for assignment. Marquez pitched in 9 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the White Sox this year and he was 3-4 with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. His only appearance with the White Sox came last year and it didn’t go well as he was 0-0 with a 18.00 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP. The White Sox have activated 29-year old lefty swinging 3B/OF Mark Teahan off the D.L. to replace Marquez on the 40-man roster. Teahan has played in 24 games for the White Sox so far this year and he is 12 for 53 (.226 avg, .637 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 4 RBIs.

UPDATE: (6/9/2011) - The Yankees have claimed Marquez off waivers. The Yankees traded Marquez to the White Sox on November 13th, 2008 in the Nick Swisher deal.

John Danks and Edwin Jackson better pick up the pace soon for the Chicago White Sox

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Pitching BP by chinmusic on Friday 3 June 2011 at 5:58 pm

26-year old lefty John Danks and 27-year old righty Edwin Jackson could be battling for one spot in the White Sox’ starting rotation when manager Ozzie Guillen decides to cut the rotation from a six manner to a five manner. Danks has pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Pale Hose so far this year and he is 0-8 with a 5.25 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. He has given up 81 hits (11 homers) in only 70 1/3 innings so far this year as he hasn’t been missing many bats this year. Edwin Jackson has pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the White Sox so far this year and he is 4-5 with a 4.63 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. He has given up 79 hits in only 68 innings pitched so far this year for the White Sox, so he isn’t missing a lot of bats either. Jackson has said that he wouldn’t object to pitching in relief, so he might be the one removed from the rotation as long as Philip Humber keeps pitching well.

Philip Humber has caused the Chicago White Sox to alter their pitching plans

When Jake Peavy had to start the 2011 season on the D.L., the White Sox opened the season with 28-year old righty Philip Humber to be the #5 starter. Coming into this season, Humber pitched in 26 games (2 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he was 2-1 with a 5.26 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. So expectations weren’t too high coming into this year for Humber. Humber has pitched in 12 games (10 starts) for the White Sox so far this year and he is 4-3 with a 3.06 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. He has only given up 52 hits and walked 14 batters in his first 67 2/3 innings for the White Sox so far this year. Humber forced manager Ozzie Guillen to go with a six man starting rotation when Peavy came off the D.L. It’s starting to look like Humber will get to keep a spot in the rotation when Guillen decides to go with a five man rotation in the near future.
