The White Sox have placed outfielder DeWayne Wise on the 15-day disabled list to make room on the active roster for 3B Joe Crede who’s coming off of the D.L. Wise has played in 35 games for the White Sox this season and he is 19 for 66 (.288 avg, .784 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 2 homers, 7 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. Getting Joe Crede back should really help the White Sox in the stretch run as long as he can stay healthy. Crede has played in 90 games for the White Sox this season and he is 79 for 310 (.255 avg, .797 OPS) with 39 runs scored, 17 homers and 54 RBIs. Crede’s defense will also help out the White Sox big time the rest of the way.

Carlos Quentin is drilling the baseball for the Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White have appeared to steal 25-year old righty swinging Carlos Quentin from the Arizona Diamondbacks over the winter. Quentin has played in 116 games for the White Sox this season and he is 123 for 429 (.287 avg, .958 OPS) with 85 runs scored, 33 homers, 91 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Without Quentin there is no way the White Sox would be contending in the American League Central. They did give up 21-year old 1B Chris Carter who was traded by the D-Backs to the A’s to get Dan Haren so I guess they are happy with the trade. Carter has played in 120 games in A-ball for the A’s this season and he is 120 for 444 (.270 avg, .957 OPS) with 91 runs scored, 35 homers, 98 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. Quentin will be a big part of the White Sox’ future as he has proven to be an outstanding major league player.

The Chicago White Sox acquire Franklyn German from the Pirates

The White Sox have acquired 27-year old righty reliever Franklyn German from the Pirates for a player to be named later. GM Kenny Williams likes hard throwers and the 6′7″, 260 pound German certainly qualifies as one. He pitched in 17 games (0 starts) this season for the Rangers and he was 1-3 with a 2.08 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. German was pitching in AAA for the Pirates and that’s where the White Sox will send him for now. German has pitched in 155 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 9-7 with 7 saves, a 4.25 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. German has had big time issues with control as he has walked 119 batters in 158.2 innings in the majors and that’s the reason he has never been able to stick in the majors. Still, this was a nice low risk addition for the White Sox.

The Chicago White Sox acquire lefty Horacio Ramirez from the Royals

GM Kenny Williams didn’t wait long in trying to replace Jose Contreras as he has acquired lefty starter/reliever Horacio Ramirez from the Royals for minor league outfielder Paulo Orlando. 28-year old lefty Horacio Ramirez has been pitching well out of the bullpen for the Royals this season. He has pitched in 15 games (0 starts) for the Royals in 2008 and he is 1-1 with a 2.59 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP. It remains to be seen whether the White Sox will use Ramirez in the rotation or in the bullpen where he has been so good this season. Ramirez has now pitched in 121 games (104 starts) in his major league career and he is 39-30 with a 4.53 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Adding Ramirez was a smart move for the White Sox and the price was right. 22-year old righty swinging Paulo Orlando has played in 111 games in A-Ball this season and he is 118 for 447 (.264 avg, .722 OPS) with 73 runs scored, 9 homers, 42 RBIs and 28 stolen bases. Orlando was not considered one of the better prospects in the White Sox’ minor league system so they won’t miss him much.

The Chicago White Sox lose Jose Contreras for the season

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Sunday 10 August 2008 at 12:23 am

The White Sox have lost righty starting pitcher Jose Contreras for the season after he ruptured his Achilles tendon in last night’s game. Contreras started 20 games in 2008 for the White Sox and he was 7-6 with a 4.54 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. The White Sox will have to trade for a replacement as no one in the minors appears ready for the job.
