The Chicago White Sox let Andy Gonzalez go

The White Sox have decided not to tender Andy Gonzalez a contract for the 2008 season. He was a rookie last season for the White Sox but he was awful enough that they didn’t want him back. Gonzalez played in 67 games last season for the White Sox and he was 35 for 189 (.185 avg, .529 OPS) with 17 runs, 2 homers and 11 RBIs. He also whiffed an amazing 61 times last season. He will get another chance in the majors because of his youth but he showed nothing last season for the White Sox and he will be no loss.

The White Sox have designated 25 year old lefty Heath Phillips for assignment to make room for Carlos Quentin on the roster. Phillips pitched in 6 games for the White Sox at the end of last season and he was 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.91 WHIP. He pitched 7.1 innings and he allowed 10 hits, walked 4 batters and whiffed 2 batters. Phillips shouldn’t have a hard time finding a new job because he’s a lefty.

The White Sox have acquired outfielder Carlos Quentin from the Diamonbacks for minor league firstbaseman Chris Carter. The White Sox appear willing to trade Joe Crede to make room for Quentin to start in left field with Josh Fields returning to third base. Quentin played in 81 games last season for the D-Backs and he was 49 for 229 (.214 avg, .647 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 5 homers and 31 RBIs but he played most of last season hurt. He has now played in 138 games in his major league career and he is 91 for 395 (.230 avg, .741 OPS) with 52 runs scored, 14 homers and 63 RBIs. This was a good move by the White Sox.
