Central.  Sveum compiled a 127-197 (39.2%) record in his two years on the job with the Cubs.  It’s hard to blame Sveum too much for the Cubs’ woes on the field as they were outmanned on most nights.

Rookie of the Year in 2010 and he was an N.L. All-Star in 2011 and 2012…..so expectations were high for him this year and he let the Cubs down.  Castro has played in 152 games for the Cubs so far this year and he is 152 of 629 (.242 avg, .623 OPS) with 56 runs scored, 9 homers, 41 RBIs and 9 stolen bases.  Castro has now played in 597 games in his first four years with the Cubs and he is 681 of 2,412 (.282 avg, .725 OPS) with 278 runs scored, 36 homers, 226 RBIs and 66 stolen bases.  The Cubs hope that Castro rebounds in 2014 and beyond.

The Chicago Cubs have claimed Daniel Bard off waivers http://chicago.bloglockers.com/cubs/2013/09/04/the-chicago-cubs-have-claimed-daniel-bard-off-waivers/ http://chicago.bloglockers.com/cubs/2013/09/04/the-chicago-cubs-have-claimed-daniel-bard-off-waivers/#comments Wed, 04 Sep 2013 18:37:29 +0000 joelapinski http://chicago.bloglockers.com/cubs/?p=931 The Cubs have claimed 28-year old righty reliever Daniel Bard off waivers from the Red Sox.  Bard pitched in 2 games (0 starts) for the Red Sox earlier this year and he was 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP.  Bard also pitched in 16 games in Rookie+AA+AAA-ball for the Red Sox this year in which he was 0-1 with a 6.46 ERA and a 2.67 WHIP.  Bard has now pitched in 211 games (10 starts) in his first five years in the majors and he is 10-19 with 5 saves, a 3.67 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  Bard has given up 193 hits while whiffing 252 batters in his first 257 1/3 innings in the majors, so he misses a lot of bats, but he has also walked 121 batters so far in his career and that’s way too many.  The Red Sox screwed up Bard when they tried to make him a starter.  I think the Cubs only view him as a reliever. This was a nice pitcher to take a flier on as no one questions Bard’s stuff.
