In the Chicago Cubs‘ 11-8 win last night over the Cincinnati Reds, 24-year old righty swinging 3B Kris Bryant did something that has not been done since 1913, when he hit three homers and two doubles in the same game!  He was 5 for 5 with 4 runs scored and 6 RBIs last night!  The most amazing thing about his awesome game last night, is that he only saw 12 pitches in this game!  Bryant has now played in 73 games overall this year for the Cubs and he is 79 of 284 (.278 avg, .934 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 21 homers, 57 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  He is leading the National League in both runs scored (59) and homers (21) right now!  Bryant has now played in 224 games in his first two years with the Cubs and he is 233 of 843 (.273 avg, .883 OPS) with 146 runs scored, 47 homers, 156 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.  He has whiffed 273 times so far in his career, but that’s a small price to pay for the power production he gives the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs have called up 40-year old righty reliever Joel Peralta.  Peralta pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Cubs this year and he was 0-0 with 2 saves, a 4.50 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP.  Peralta also pitched in 26 games (0 starts) for the Mariners earlier this year and he was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.  To make room in the pen for Peralta, the Cubs have sent 24-year old lefty reliever Gerardo Concepcion to AAA.  Concepcion pitched in 3 games (0 starts) for the Cubs this year in his first taste of the majors and he was 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP.  Concepcion might get another shot with the Cubs later this year.

28-year old righty closer Hector Rondon has been awesome so far this year for the Chicago Cubs!  He has pitched in 25 games (0 starts) for the Cubs so far this year and he is 1-1 with 12 saves, a 1.48 ERA and a 0.66 WHIP.  Rondon has only given up 13 hits and 3 walks while whiffing 33 batters in his first 24 1/3 innings this year for the Cubbies!  Rondon was a Rule 5 Draft Pick back on December 6th, 2012…..when the Cubs snatched Rondon away from the Cleveland Indians.  Rondon has now pitched in 206 games (0 starts) in his first four years with the Cubs and he is 13-10 with 71 saves, a 2.67 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP.  Rondon is already #6 in career saves (71) in Cubs’ history!

Jason Heyward has been a huge disappointment for the Chicago Cubs in 2016

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,In Need of a Slumpbuster by joelapinski on Friday 24 June 2016 at 12:37 pm

26-year old lefty swinging RF Jason Heyward was signed to a ludicrous 8-year, $184 deal over the winter and he is laughing all the way to the bank so far this year for the Chicago Cubs.  Heyward has played in 63 games for the Cubs so far this year and he is 58 of 246 (.236 avg, .657 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 4 homers, 25 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.  He is showing some signs of life with the bat so far in June.  In his 20 games so far this month, Heyward is 21 of 78 (.269 avg, .773 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 3 homers and 7 RBIs.  I have always thought that Heyward was overrated and he is showing that full force for the Cubs so far in 2016!

The Chicago Cubs have sent 28-year old righty reliever Adam Warren to AAA.  Warren pitched in 25 games (0 starts) for the Cubs this year and he was 3-1 with a 4.56 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.  He has given up 22 hits and 18 walks while whiffing 18 batters in his first 25 2/3 innings for the Cubs this year.  Warren is being sent to AAA to stretch out and return as a starting pitcher.  The Cubs will go with a six man rotation for a couple of weeks after Warren returns to Chicago.  The Cubs have called up 28-year old righty reliever Spencer Patton to replace Warren in the pen.  Patton pitched in 1 game out of the pen earlier this year for the Cubs and he didn’t get anyone out while allowing 1 hit, 1 walk and 1 run (it was earned).  Patton has also pitched in 26 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year for the Cubs and he was 0-0 with 8 saves, a 1.04 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.  He gave up 18 hits and 9 walks while whiffing 42 batters in his first 26 innings in AAA this year.  The Cubs hope he pitches like he did in AAA ball this time around.

The Chicago Cubs have placed 32-year old lefty reliever Clayton Richard on the 15-day disabled list due to a blister.  He has pitched in 22 games (0 starts) so far this year for the Cubs and he is 0-1 with 1 save, a 7.30 ERA and a 2.19 WHIP.  Richard has given up 21 hits and 6 walks while whiffing only 6 batters in his first 12 1/3 innings, so he has been getting hit hard this year.  The Cubs have called up 24-year old lefty reliever Gerardo Concepcion to replace Richard in the pen.  This will be Concepcion’s first shot at pitching in the show.  He pitched in 22 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball for the Cubs so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP.  Concepcion has given up 2o hits and 14 walks while whiffing 34 batters in his 35 innings in AAA-ball so far this year.  Concepcion has now pitched in 103 games (14 starts) in his first five years in the minors and he is 8-11 with 2 saves, a 4.80 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP.

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by joelapinski on Thursday 16 June 2016 at 5:00 pm

The Chicago Cubs have designated 28-year old righty swinging catcher Tim Federowicz for assignment.  Federowicz played in 13 games for the Cubs this year and he was 5 for 26 (.192 avg, .491 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 0 homers and 2 RBIs.  He has now played in 102 games in his first five years in the show and he is 53 of 273 (.194 avg, .542 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 5 homers and 24 RBIs.  The Cubs have called up 24-year old righty swinging catcher Willson Contreras to replace Federowicz on the active roster.  Contreras came into this season as the Cubs’ #2 prospect according to Baseball America.  Contreras played in 54 games in AAA-ball for the Cubs this year and he was 71 of 203 (.350 avg, 1.030 OPS) with 40 runs scored, 9 homers, 43 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  Contreras has now played in 516 games in his first 8 years in the minors and he is 536 of 1,895 (.283 avg, .775 OPS) with 284 runs scored, 39 homers, 282 RBIs and 31 stolen bases.  This will be Contreras’ first shot at the show.

Addison Russell has been playing well for the Chicago Cubs

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by joelapinski on Wednesday 15 June 2016 at 9:19 am

22-year old righty swinging SS Addison Russell has been playing well so far this year for the Chicago Cubs.  He has played in 58 games for the Cubs so far this year and he is 47 of 203 (.232 avg, .685 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 5 homers, 33 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.  Russell is currently 4th on the Cubs in RBIs, so he has been pretty clutch despite the low batting average.  The Cubs got him from the Oakland A’s on July 5th, 2014 in the deal that sent out Jason Hammel and Jeff Samardzija.  Russell has now played in 200 games in his first two years with the Cubs and he is 162 of 678 (.239 avg, .693 OPS) with 85 runs scored, 18 homers, 87 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.
