The Chicago Cubs have acquired 28-year old lefty closer Aroldis Chapman from the New York Yankees for 19-year old righty swinging SS Gleyber Torres, 22-year old lefty swinging outfielder Rashad Crawford, 21-year old lefty swinging outfielder Billy McKinney and 28-year old righty reliever/starter Adam Warren.
Chapman pitched in 31 games (0 starts) for the Yankees this year and he was 3-0 with 20 saves, a 2.01 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. Chapman has given up only 20 hits and 8 walks while whiffing 44 batters in his first 31 1/3 innings this year! Chapman has now pitched in 355 games (0 starts) in his first seven years in the show and he is 22-20 with 166 saves, a 2.16 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. Chapman has given up 189 hits and 163 walks while whiffing 590 batters in his first 350 1/3 innings in the show! He is an awesome closer and this deal shows that the Cubs are All In in 2016!
Chapman didn’t come cheap though, as Torres was the best prospect the Cubs had coming into the 2016 season according to Baseball America. Torres played in 94 games in A-ball this year for the Cubs and he was 98 of 356 (.275 avg, .791 OPS) with 62 runs scored, 9 homers, 47 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. McKinney came into this season as the Cubs’ #7 prospect according to Baseball America. McKinney played in 88 games in AA-ball for the Cubs this year and he was 75 of 298 (.252 avg, .677 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 1 homers, 31 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Crawford was not considered a big time prospect coming into this year. He played in 83 games in A-ball this year for the Cubs and he was 84 of 329 (.255 avg, .713 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 3 homers, 30 RBIs and 22 stolen bases. Warren came to the Cubs last off-season in a deal with the Yankees for Starlin Castro. Warren pitched in 29 games (1 start) for the Cubs this year and he was 3-2 with a 5.91 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Warren gave up 31 hits (7 homers) and 19 walks while whiffing 27 batters in 35 innings for the Cubs this year.
