The Cubs have signed 32-year old righty reliever Kyuji Fujikawa to a 2-year, $9.5 million dollar deal. Fujikawa pitched in 48 games in Japan last year and he was 2-2 with 24 saves, a 1.32 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. In his last six years, Fujikawa pitched in 345 games (0 starts) in which he was 26-18 with 202 saves, a 1.36 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. He only gave up 222 hits and 94 walks while whiffing 510 batters in 369 2/3 innings in his last six years in Japan, which is impressive. He will challenge Carlos Marmol for the closer’s job for the Cubs next spring.
