The Chicago Cubs sign Hisanori Takahashi

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Friday 28 December 2012 at 8:26 am

The Cubs have signed 37-year old lefty reliever Hisanori Takahashi to a minor league deal. He pitched in 51 games (0 starts) for the Pirates and Angels last year in which he was 0-3 with a 5.54 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Takahashi has now pitched in 165 games (12 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 14-12 with 10 saves, a 3.97 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. Takahashi took a step back last year, but he was a very solid pitcher in his first two years in the majors, so he might rebound and help the Cubs in 2013. This was a nice low risk gamble for the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs sign 1B Brad Nelson

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Saturday 22 December 2012 at 9:37 pm

The Cubs have signed 30-year old lefty swinging 1B Brad Nelson to a minor league deal. Nelson played in 132 games in AAA-ball for the Rangers last year and he was 140 of 502 (.279 avg, .852 OPS) with 85 runs scored, 24 homers, 81 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. He last played in the majors back in 2009 with the Brewers. He has played in 28 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 2 for 28 (.071 avg, .304 OPS) without a run scored, homer or RBI. Nelson will be a big time longshot to win a bench job with the Cubs next spring.

The Chicago Cubs have signed Edwin Jackson

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 20 December 2012 at 7:07 pm

The Cubs have signed 29-year old righty starting pitcher Edwin Jackson to a 4-year, $52 million dollar deal. Jackson pitched in 31 games (all starts) for the Nationals last year and he was 10-11 with a 4.03 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. He has now pitched in 234 games (204 starts) in his first 10 years in the majors and he is 70-71 with a 4.40 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. The Cubs might have overpaid a little bit for Jackson, but he’s a pretty dependable starter, so maybe that’s the going rate for a pitcher like him.

The Chicago Cubs sign Cory Wade

He has now pitched in 301 games (56 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 33-35 with 6 saves, a 4.26 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. Villanueva will likely be in the Cubs’ starting rotation in 2013, as that is the kind of job he was looking for.

The Chicago Cubs sign Jensen Lewis

UPDATE: (12/22/2012) - The Cubs have lost Jeff Beliveau on waivers to the Texas Rangers.

The Chicago Cubs sign Chang-Yong Lim

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 13 December 2012 at 8:46 am

The Chicago Cubs have signed 36-year old righty reliever Chang-Yong Lim to a 2-year split contract (pays him more for pitching in the majors than the minors). He had Tommy John Surgery last July, so he might not be ready to pitch for the Cubs until 2014. Lim pitched in 9 games (0 starts) in Japan last year and he was 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. In his five years pitching in Japan, Lim pitched in 238 games (0 starts) in which he was 11-13 with 128 saves, a 2.09 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP. It will be interesting to see how Lim does in the majors, as he has been pretty darn good in Japan.
