Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Thursday 30 August 2012 at 3:40 pm

23-year old lefty swinging 1B Anthony Rizzo was awesome for the Cubs in July, but the pitchers have caught up to him already. He has played in 25 games so far in August and he is 24 of 101 (.238 avg, .578 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 1 homer, 8 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Rizzo has now played in 56 games overall this year for the Cubs and he is 60 for 213 (.282 avg, .767 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 9 homers, 28 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The Cubs hope that Rizzo gets back on track with the bat in September.

The Chicago Cubs have designated Alex Hinshaw for assignment

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Wednesday 29 August 2012 at 8:36 am

The Cubs have designated 29-year old lefty reliever Alex Hinshaw for assignment. Hinshaw pitched in 2 games (0 starts) for the Cubs and it was a disaster as he was 0-0 with a 135.00 ERA and a 15.00 WHIP. He pitched 1/3 of an inning for the Cubs and he gave up 4 hits (3 homers), 5 runs (all earned) and he walked 1 batter…..which is pathetic! Hinshaw has now pitched in 33 games (0 starts) for the Padres and Cubs overall this year and he is 1-1 with a 6.04 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. This is no loss for the Cubs as Hinshaw was really horrible in his short stay with the team.

UPDATE: (9/2/2012) – Alex Hinshaw has been outrighted to AAA-ball by the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs have designated 27-year old lefty reliever Scott Maine for assignment. Maine pitched in 21 games (0 starts) for the Cubs this year and he was 1-1 with a 4.79 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. He pitched in 41 games (0 starts) in his three years with the Cubs and he was 1-1 with a 4.87 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Maine might not make it through waivers, but the Cubs seem o.k. with losing him if they have to.

UPDATE: (8/29/2012) – The Cubs have lost Scott Maine on waivers to the Cleveland Indians.

The Chicago Cubs have claimed catcher Anthony Recker off waivers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Monday 27 August 2012 at 6:27 pm

The Chicago Cubs have claimed 28-year old righty swinging catcher Anthony Recker off waivers from the A’s. Recker played in 13 games for the A’s this year and he was 4 for 31 (.129 avg, .411 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 0 homers or RBIs. Recker also played in 52 games in AAA-ball this year for the A’s and he was 53 of 200 (.265 avg, .793 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 9 homers, 29 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Recker has now played in 18 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 7 for 48 (.146 avg, .468 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 0 homers and 0 RBIs. Recker will replace Blake Lalli in AAA, so essentially the A’s and Cubs dealt minor league catchers for each other.

UPDATE: The Cubs actually acquired Anthony Recker in a deal with the A’s for Blake Lalli.

The Chicago Cubs have claimed Miguel Socolovich off waivers

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Friday 24 August 2012 at 8:24 am

The Cubs have claimed 26-year old righty reliever Miguel Socolovich off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. He pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Orioles earlier this year and he was 0-0 with a 6.97 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. Socolovich also has pitched in 28 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year and he was 4-0 with 2 saves, a 1.90 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP. He gave up only 33 hits and 14 walks in 52 innings pitched in the minors this year while whiffing 52 batters, which is impressive. This is a pitcher worth taking a look at, so I like this pickup for the Cubs.

Justin Bour is looking good in AA-ball for the Chicago Cubs

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Thursday 23 August 2012 at 7:36 am

24-year old lefty swinging 1B Justin Bour is turning in another rock solid year in the minors for the Cubs. Bour has played in 126 games in AA-ball so far this year and he is 137 of 462 (.297 avg, .839 OPS) with 54 runs scored, 16 homers, 108 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. He has now played in 448 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 476 of 1,676 (.284 avg, .806 OPS) with 202 runs scored, 55 homers, 320 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Bour might move to the outfield at some point as he appears blocked at the major league level by Anthony Rizzo.

A couple of top prospects on the Chicago Cubs are having problems so far

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Wednesday 22 August 2012 at 9:35 am

24-year old lefty swinging CF Brett Jackson and 22-year old righty swinging 3B Josh Vitters are having big time trouble with major league pitching so far this year. Jackson has played in 15 games for the Cubs so far this year and he is 9 for 51 (.176 avg, .577 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs. He has walked 6 times while whiffing a utterly pathetic 26 times already this year for the Cubs. Vitters has played in 12 games for the Cubs so far this year and he is 5 for 41 (.122 avg, .363 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer, 4 RBIs and 1 stolen base. He has whiffed 16 times already for the Cubs and he has yet to walk. I don’t see how letting these guys struggle so badly is going to help them down the road.

The Chicago Cubs have officially shut down Matt Garza for the rest of the 2012 season

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 21 August 2012 at 6:12 pm

The Cubs have officially shut down 28-year old righty starting pitcher Matt Garza for the rest of the 2012 season due to a stress reaction in his right elbow. Garza pitched in 18 games (all starts) for the Cubs this year and he was 5-7 with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. He has now pitched in 49 games (all starts) in his first two years with the Cubs and he is 15-17 with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. This is a bad break for Garza and the Cubs, as he always seems to keep them in the game when he starts.
