Kosuke Fukudome is proving to be a little overrated for the Chicago Cubs

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,In Need of a Slumpbuster by chinmusic on Sunday 27 July 2008 at 2:38 pm

The Cubs thought that they were getting a good left handed power bat when they signed Fukudome but he has not performed like advertised. In fact, the Cubs have dropped him way down in the batting order because of his lack of pop. Fukudome has played in 98 games for the Cubs this season and he is 98 for 353 (.278 avg, .786 OPS) with 62 runs scored, 7 homers, 36 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. The Cubs’ envisioned him being a player similar to Hideki Matsui but he’s nowhere near that league in regard to talent. The Cubs need more punch from Fukudome if they are going to hold on and win the National League Central.

The Chicago Cubs place Kerry Wood on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Monday 21 July 2008 at 3:12 pm

The Cubs have placed closer Kerry Wood on the 15-day disabled list due to a blister on his right index finger. Wood has not pitched since July 11th because of the injury and his D.L. stay is retroactive to that date making him elgible to return to action on July 26th if he’s able. Wood has pitched in 44 games for the Cubs this season and he is 4-2 with 24 saves, a 3.02 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP. He has only allowed 32 hits in 44.2 innings this season while whiffing 55 batters. The Cubs have finally found a role that suits Wood and has kept him healthy for the most part.

The Chicago Cubs have placed Jon Lieber on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 19 July 2008 at 3:19 pm

The Cubs have placed righty swingman Jon Lieber on the 15-day disabled list with a right foot sprain. Lieber has pitched in 25 games (1 start) for the Cubs this season and he is 2-3 with a 3.43 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. This injury will hurt the Cubs some as Lieber was a good long reliever and spot starter. They were smart to acquire Chad Gaudin last week from the A’s as he will assume Lieber’s old role going forward.

The Chicago Cubs expect more out of outfielder Tyler Colvin

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Monday 14 July 2008 at 11:44 pm

22-year old lefty swinging outfielder Tyler Colvin was the #3 prospect in the Cubs’ minor league system coming into this season according to Baseball America but he isn’t playing up to it right now. Colvin has played in 93 games in AA-Ball for the Cubs this season and he is 86 for 361 (.238 avg, .689 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 7 homers, 46 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. The Cubs like Colvin’s upside but he’ll need to start showing more to earn a promotion before this year is over.

Donald Veal has been good but wild in AA for the Chicago Cubs

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,The Minors by chinmusic on Wednesday 9 July 2008 at 5:50 pm

23-year old lefty starting pitcher Donald Veal is the #6 prospect in the Cubs’ minor league system according to the Baseball America Prospect Handbook and the team was happy that the A’s didn’t ask for him in the Rich Harden trade. Veal has started 19 games in AA ball this season and he is 4-5 with a 3.33 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. But, he’s been very wild and that will need to change before he’s promoted above AA. He has walked 52 batters and hit 9 of them in only 100 innings. Veal will have a bright future with the Cubs if he can learn to tame the flame.

The Chicago Cubs acquire Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin from the A’s

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Tuesday 8 July 2008 at 7:17 pm

The Chicago Cubs acted quickly to counter the C.C. Sabathia acquistion by the Brewers by acquiring 26-year old righty starting pitcher Rich Harden and 25-year old righty starter/reliever Chad Gaudin. The Cubs had to give up Sean Gallagher, Matt Murton, Eric Patterson and Josh Donaldson to the A’s. Rich Harden is a dominating pitcher when healthy but he’s as brittle as either Kerry Wood was in his younger days. Harden has started 13 games for the A’s this season and he is 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Harden has whiffed 92 batters while only allowing 57 hits in 77 innings this season which gives you an idea of how great his stuff is. Harden has now pitched in 97 games (89 starts) in his major league career and he is 36-19 with a 3.42 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. If he can stay healthy he can help anchor a very solid Cubs’ starting rotation. Chad Gaudin’s addition by the Cubs can’t be overlooked especially with how brittle Harden has been in his career. Gaudin can either start or relieve and he’s been efffective in both roles in his career. Gaudin has pitched in 26 games (6 starts) for the A’s this season and he is 5-3 with a 3.59 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Gaudin has now pitched in 161 games (50 starts) in his major league career and he is 24-23 with 2 saves, a 4.33 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. This trade really adds some teeth to an already good Chicago Cubs’ pitching staff.

The Cubs did have to give up some quality talent to acquire the pair of pitchers from the A’s. 22-year old righty Sean Gallagher has been a decent pitcher for the Cubs this season. In 12 games (10 starts) for the Cubs this season he was 3-4 with a 4.45 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. The A’s will probably let him slide right into Harden’s old spot in the rotation. Gallagher finishes his Cubs career having pitched in 20 games (10 starts) and he was 3-4 with 1 save, a 5.28 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. Matt Murton was in the Cubs’ dog house for some reason and he will definately get a chance to prove himself out in Oakland. Murton played in 19 games for the Cubs this season and he was 10 for 40 (.250 avg, .586 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 6 RBIs. Murton finishes his career with the Cubs having played in 308 games in which he was 256 for 870 (.294 avg, .810 OPS) with 126 runs scored, 28 homers, 104 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. Eric Patterson appears to have a lot of upside but he was behind too many players in Chicago. Patterson played in 13 games for the Cubs this season and he was 9 for 38 (.237 avg, .660 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer, 7 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Patterson finishes his career with the Cubs having played in 20 games in which he was 11 for 46 (.239 avg, .656 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer, 7 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Josh Donaldson is a 22-year old righty swinging catcher playing in A-ball where he was struggling. Donaldson has played in 63 games in A-Ball this season and he is 51 for 235 (.217 avg, .625 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 6 homers, 23 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. This trade will come back to haunt the Cubs if Harden gets hurt again, but, if he can stay healthy this was a good move for the Cubs. It’s that simple.

Jim Edmonds has been a godsend for the Chicago Cubs

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Playing Well by chinmusic on Saturday 5 July 2008 at 3:58 pm

Jim Edmonds looked washed up in San Diego before the Padres cut him loose. Edmonds played in 26 games with the Padres and he was 16 for 90 (.178 avg, .498 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 1 homer, 6 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. But, he has regained his power stroke in the Windy City since coming to the Cubs. Edmonds has played in 37 games with the Cubbies this season and he is 32 for 113 (.283 avg, .945 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 8 homers and 24 RBIs. He has brought some added thump to the powerful Cubs lineup in addition to a still solid glove.

Kerry Wood has been lights out for the Chicago Cubs this season

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Throwing Well by chinmusic on Wednesday 2 July 2008 at 8:15 am

Kerry Wood blew a couple of saves early in the season but he’s nails right now. He has saved 20 of 24 games for the Cubs this season as the game has pretty much been over when he jogs in from the bullpen the last couple of months. Wood has pitched in 39 games for the Cubs this season and he is 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. Wood has allowed only 26 hits in 40.2 innings while whiffing 51 batters. The Cubs probably should have moved him to the pen a long time ago as his body and arm seem to agree with this role.
