The Chicago Cubs place Scott Eyre on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Saturday 28 June 2008 at 4:27 pm

The Cubs have placed lefty reliever Scott Eyre on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain. Eyre has pitched in 18 games (0 starts) for the Cubs this season and he is 2-0 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. The Cubs have recalled 23-year old righthander Jose Ascanio to replace Eyre in the bullpen. Ascanio has pitched in 24 games (0 starts) in AAA ball this season and he is 1-0 with 11 saves, a 3.86 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. He has also pitched in 5 games for the Cubs and he is 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.

The Chicago Cubs place Reed Johnson on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Thursday 26 June 2008 at 9:40 am

The Cubs have placed outfielder Reed Johnson on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. Johnson has played in 56 games for the Cubs this season and he is 49 for 181 (.271 avg, .730 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 3 homers, 31 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The Cubs have activated OF/1B Daryle Ward from the D.L. Ward has played in 31 games for the Cubs this season and he is 5 for 25 (.200 avg, .829 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer and 6 RBIs. Matt Murton will likely see a bump in playing time while Johnson is out.

The Chicago Cubs place Carlos Zambrano on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Sunday 22 June 2008 at 12:38 am

The Cubs have placed righty starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano on the 15-day disabled list with a mild strain of his right shoulder. Zambrano has started 16 games this season for the Cubs and he is 8-3 with a 3.13 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. The Cubs better get on the horn with teams regarding starting pitching as Zambrano will be very hard to replace.

The Chicago Cubs may need another starting pitcher

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Trade Rumors by chinmusic on Friday 20 June 2008 at 8:09 am

I was looking at the Cubs roster the other day looking for a weakness but they didn’t appear to have one until Carlos Zambrano hurt himself a couple of nights ago in Tampa. It might cost too much in prospects to get C.C. Sabathia from the Indians but instead of going for a pitcher like Greg Maddux why not still aim high and try to stick the new GM of the Mariners for Erik Bedard? The Mariners would probably jump at an offer of Rich Hill, Matt Murton and Felix Pie as they are looking to tear their roster up and go young. 29-year old lefty Erik Bedard has pitched in 12 games (all starts) for the Mariners this year and he is 4-4 with a 4.14 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He has whiffed 62 batters in 67.1 innings which means he still has his good stuff. He has now pitched in 126 games (123 starts) in his major league career and he is 44-38 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. His career record is pretty impressive when you consider how awful some of the Orioles’ teams he pitched on were.

Rich Hill is still having control issues in AAA for the Chicago Cubs

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, The Minors by chinmusic on Monday 16 June 2008 at 1:12 pm

The Cubs had high hopes for 28-year old lefty starting pitcher Rich Hill but he failed to come through and was demoted to AAA ball after a rough start to the 2008 season. He started 5 games for the Cubs this season and he was 1-0 with a 4.12 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. He walked 18 batters but only allowed 13 hits in 19.2 innings which indicates that he still had good stuff but he just couldn’t control it. The Cubs sent him to AAA to tighten his control and they were prepared to bring him up quickly but it hasn’t worked out. Hill has started in 6 games in AAA this season and he is 2-3 with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. He has only allowed 19 hits and he’s whiffed 31 batters in only 25.1 innings in AAA but he has walked 24 batters and that won’t be tolerated by the Cubs’ brass. Hill could be included in a trade soon as another team might be willing to roll the dice to try to get the best out of him. But, the Cubs won’t recall him until he starts throwing strikes consistently.

Geovany Soto is having an outstanding season for the Chicago Cubs

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Playing Well by chinmusic on Thursday 12 June 2008 at 11:34 pm

Cubs’ starting catcher Geovany Soto is off to an outstanding start to the season. He has played in 61 games this season for the Cubs and he is 63 for 219 (.288 avg, .908 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 11 homers and 42 RBIs. But, he has also whiffed 60 times this season but you won’t hear the Cubs’ complaining about that as long as he keeps hitting like he is right now. He will have a good shot to make the All Star team if he keeps playing at his current level.

The Chicago Cubs sign 1B/OF Ben Broussard

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Thursday 12 June 2008 at 7:56 pm

The Cubs have signed 31-year old lefty swinging Ben Broussard to a minor league contract. Broussard probably won’t be in the minors long if he hits well in AAA. Broussard played in 26 games for the Rangers this season and he was 13 for 82 (.159 avg, .493 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 3 homers and 8 RBIs. Broussard has also played in 12 AAA games this season and he was 14 for 43 (.326 avg, .978 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 1 homer and 6 RBIs. Broussard has had a productive major league career to date as he has played in 705 games and he is 561 for 2,136 (.263 avg, .774 OPS) with 275 runs scored, 87 homers and 314 RBIs. This was a nice low risk/high reward signing for the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs lose Alfonso Soriano

Blogged under Bloglockers, Front Page, General, Injuries by chinmusic on Wednesday 11 June 2008 at 11:12 pm

The Cubs will be without starting LF Alfonso Soriano for at least the next six weeks after he was hit in his left hand with a pitch breaking a bone. This is a shame as Soriano was really on fire as of late. Soriano has played in 50 games this season for the Cubs and he is 60 for 211 (.284 avg, .880 OPS) with 36 runs scored, 15 homers, 40 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. The Cubs are planning on playing starting 2B Mark DeRosa in LF quite a bit with Mike Fontenot replacing him at 2B. DeRosa can handle LF defensively and he’s hitting well this season. DeRosa has played in 60 games for the Cubs this season and he is 63 for 204 (.309 avg, .887 OPS) with 39 runs scored, 8 homers, 35 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Mike Fontenot has played in 50 games for the Cubs this season and he is 21 for 85 (.247 avg, .747 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 2 homers, 12 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The Cubs would be smarter if they just called up Matt Murton to start in LF and leave DeRosa at 2B. But they won’t because Murton is in the Cubs’ Dog House.

The Chicago Cubs acquire Jim Brower from the Reds

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers, Front Page, General by chinmusic on Monday 2 June 2008 at 8:44 pm

The Cubs have acquired 35-year old righty reliever Jim Brower from the Reds for cash considerations. Brower has pitched in 18 games (0 starts) in AAA ball this season and he is 0-1 with 3 saves, a 2.77 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. Brower has pitched in 354 games (28 starts) in his major league career so far and he is 33-32 with 5 saves, a 4.67 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. Brower will provide bullpen depth in AAA for the Cubs as they stole him from the division rival Reds.
