The Chicago Cubs sign six players to minor league contracts

The Cubs have signed J.D. Closser, Koyie Hill, Andres Blanco, Luis Figueroa, Andres Torres and Les Walrond to minor league contracts. J.D. Closser is a 28-year old switch hitter who last played in the majors in 2006 with the Rockies. Closser has played in 160 games in his major league career and he is 107 for 447 (.239 avg, .687 OPS) with 46 runs scored, 10 homers and 48 RBIs. 28 year old switch hitting Koyie Hill played in 36 games for the Cubs last season and he had a rough time. Hill was 15 for 93 (.161 avg, .500 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 homers and 12 RBIs. Hill has now played in 86 games in his major league career and he is 42 for 210 (.200 avg, .566 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 3 homers and 24 RBIs. Closser and Hill will battle for the #3 catcher job in the Cubs organization which could be an important role with backup Henry Blanco missing much of last season with a bad back. Infielders Andres Blanco and Luis Figueroa will be battling for a place on the bench for the Cubs. Blanco is a 23 year old switch hitting defensive specialist who last played in the majors in 2006 with the Royals. Blanco has now played in 78 games in his major league career and he is 57 for 226 (.252 avg, .604 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 0 homers and 19 RBIs. Figueroa is a 33-year old switch hitter. He played in 6 games last season for the Giants and he was 1 for 5 with a run scored. Figueroa has now played in 18 games in his major league career and he is 2 for 16 (.125 avg, .313 OPS) with 2 runs scored. 29 year old switch hitting outfielder Andres Torres will also try to make the Cubs roster. He last played in the majors in 2005. Torres has now played in 89 games in his major league career and he is 54 of 257 (.210 avg, .534 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 1 homer, 13 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. 31-year old lefty Les Walrond last pitched in the majors in 2006 with the Cubs. Walrond has now pitched in 17 games (2 starts) in his major league career and he is 0-3 with a 7.46 ERA and a 1.93 WHIP.
